Here’s your Paranormal Pop Culture Update for the week of March 6th, 2015!

In Theaters this Week

Based in the near future, a mechanical police force in an impoverished town controls the crime, until the citizens begin to fight back. Chappie, a police droid, is stolen, re-programmed, and therefore given the ability to think and feel for himself. Premiering on Friday, March 6th, this Sci-Fi thriller stars Sharlto Copley (Chappie), Dev Patel (Deon), Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman.

Chappie is the story of a gifted, special child, who just happens to be a robot. It’s not, however, the most family-friendly movie due to its R rating, and as such, may not be suitable for children.

Premiering on Video on Demand March 6, 2015, Avenged combines action, drama, horror, and fantasy – all in one movie. Zoe (Amanda Adrienne) is a young deaf girl who’s journeying to the American Southwest to see her fiancé, despite being warned about what a dangerous place it can be. After being brutally assaulted by a gang, she is left for dead. The spirit of an Apache warrior then inhabits Zoe’s lifeless body, and revenge is imminent.

Written, edited, and directed by Michael S. Ojeda, this independent film has everything you’d hope for in a horror movie: gore, creativity, gore, originality, blood, and more gore!

With a publication date of March 1, 2015, The Mermaid’s Sister is the 2014 Winner for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award in Young Adult Fiction. The Mermaid’s Sister follows Clara, a sixteen-year-old girl, her twin sister Maren, and their best friend O’Neill, as they embark on a quest for answers to who they really are.

This story begins in a cottage high atop Llanfair Mountain, where Clara’s guardian, Auntie, first told the story of three orphan infants. Clara-was brought by a stork, Maren-had arrived in a seashell, and O’Neill-was found beneath an apple tree.

Clara discovers her sister is becoming a mermaid, when one day she notices shimmering scales beneath Maren’s skin. Desperate to save her, Clara and O’Neill put Maren in their gypsy-wagon and begin their journey to the sea. Trouble is not far though, and the trio is soon captured by an evil troupe of traveling performers.

Combining fantasy, drama, and adventure, The Mermaid’s Sister features a young girl daring to find answers to the age-old question – who am I?

Haunted Events and Phil Whyman brings you another highly anticipated ghost hunt, located at Bolling Hall in Bradford. This event will be on Saturday, March 7th 2015 from 9 PM – 3:30 AM. Included in the ghost hunt is the use of ghost hunting equipment, such as EMF meters, infrared thermometers, Ouija boards, and dowsing devices.

Bolling Hall has had a long and tumultuous history; going back as far it’s mention in the Domesday Book in 1086. William Bolling owned Bolling Hall by 1316, and it stayed in the family’s estate until the late 1400’s. It was then passed to the Tempests, who owned it until 1649. The manor became a base for Royalist supporters during the English Civil War, when they took control of Bradford. Amidst Parliamentarian supporters was a fear they’d be put to death, but legend has it that a ghost appeared the commander of the Royalists (the Earl of Newcastle) in his bedroom at Bolling Hall, pleading with him to ‘pity poor Bradford’. The manor was acquired by the Bradford Corporation in 1912 and opened as a museum a few years later.

Bolling Hall has a long reputation for being haunted; 20 years ago a local newspaper advertised a £50 reward for any person will to spend the night in the manor, but nobody accepted the challenge! It’s not a surprise why; as visitors have said they’ve heard footsteps and unexplained voices in empty rooms. There have also been many documented encounters with full-body manifestations, one being a ‘menacing’ man dressed all in black. Be sure to bring your camera, and let us know if you catch any paranormal activity!
